building the car community in Singapore, one car at a time

About to Pay a Car Deposit in Singapore? You’re Probably Not Ready Yet.

COE gets all the attention. Parking, the cash downpayment, insurance and ERP setup are what decide whether you can actually live with the car.

You walk into the showroom. The salesman quotes a monthly instalment. You nod. You put down a deposit.

Then the bank wants more cash upfront than you budgeted, your HDB car park is full, insurance won’t cover your partner unless you declare them, and nobody mentioned ERP backend payment before your first drive to work.

Buying a car here isn’t one transaction. It’s COE, loan, insurance, parking, road tax and ERP, all stacked in the wrong order if you’re not careful. Run through this before you sign.

The money before you pick a colour

Work backwards from cash, not the instalment. MAS Rules cap loans by Open Market Value (OMV):

  • OMV $20,000 or less: max 70% loan, up to 7 years
  • OMV above $20,000: max 60% loan, up to 7 years

Purchase price includes COE, ARF, GST and taxes. For most new cars, that’s 40%+ cash down, often six figures. No CPF. Insurance and road tax aren’t in the loan either.

If you can only just afford the downpayment, you probably can’t afford the car. Budget instalment, insurance, parking, petrol and ERP monthly before you fall in love with a model.

COE, ARF and the quote on paper

You need a Certificate of Entitlement, the right to own and use the car for 10 years. Passenger cars bid in Category A or B:

  • Cat A: non-fully electric cars up to 1,600cc and 97kW; fully electric up to 110kW
  • Cat B: everything above that

Wrong category, COE can’t be used. Cat A isn’t always cheaper anymore. Check both.

Most buyers let the dealer bid. Still ask which category they’re using and what happens if COE moves between deposit and registration. Bidding yourself? $10,000 deposit for Cat A or B, twice a month.

On top of COE: ARF, VES rebates or surcharges, registration fee and GST. Buying an EV? VES and EEAI chip away at ARF, not COE, and only up to what your ARF actually is. Showroom “$30,000 off” often means less in your pocket than it sounds.

Get a written breakdown: COE, ARF before rebates, rebates applied, OMV, on-the-road price. No itemisation? Walk.

Loan and insurance before collection

The bank wants insurance arranged before disbursement. Comprehensive cover is standard for financed cars. Get quotes before you commit. Premiums swing hard by model and NCD. Undeclared drivers can void a claim.

You’ll need NRIC, income proof, sale agreement and a quote in the main driver’s name. Match loan tenure to how long you’ll keep the car. Seven years of interest on a car you sell in four hurts.

Parking: the one that catches everyone

Parking is not included. Not from the dealer. Not from HDB when you buy a flat.

HDB season parking is a separate application. You get access to a car park group, not a lot with your name on it. Tier 1 is your household’s first car in that precinct; Tier 2 is second cars and non-residents, and it’s pricier, especially in the Restricted Zone.

Condo? Rules live in MCST by-laws. Ask for the parking circular, not a verbal “should be fine.” Renting a room? You may be 3rd priority. Factor that in.

ERP, road tax and the boring admin

Road tax: renew via OneMotoring or gov.sg SMS before it expires.

ERP 2.0: set up a backend payment service (NETS, EZ-Pay, AXS Drive). Miss a charge and LTA SMS gives you 5 days to pay without the $10 fee, but only through official channels. Real SMS use gov.sg. LTA doesn’t send payment links.

Valid licence for whoever drives it. P-platers: from 1 January 2027, revocation threshold drops to 12 demerit points in 12 months.

Before you drive off

  • Insurance active, parking sorted, ERP payment linked
  • Mobile number updated on Singpass for LTA alerts
  • Photograph the car at handover; check OBU/IU works
  • Renew road tax when prompted; budget petrol and servicing
  • Something wrong? Don’t sign acceptance yet

The one-page checklist

  • Budget: 40%+ cash down; monthly costs beyond instalment
  • COE: Cat A or B matches your car; quote itemised
  • Loan + insurance: Pre-approved; named drivers declared
  • Parking: HDB availability or condo rules confirmed
  • ERP + road tax: Payment setup understood

The showroom makes the car feel inevitable. This list makes it livable.
